Whether you live where it snows or in southern California, people love to keep their heads warm with hand-crafted hats, from beanies to slouchy hats.

But winter time is also the perfect time for those whimsical creations, the pixie hat. Or more importantly the pixie hooded hat. These hats are easy to make and are so much fun to wear.
Make it in red and you instantly become little red riding hood. Any colors you make it in you are going to feel like a fantasy character.
With the holidays coming along this is a perfect project to take. It is made with two strands held together which makes this a fast project for those last minute gifts.

Materials:
  • N Hook
  • 2 skeins Red Heart Grey Heather or any worsted weight yarn or bulky yarn
  • Tapestry Needle
Stitches used:
  • Chain – ch
  • Single crochet – sc
  • Double crochet – dc
  • Back loop only – blo
Ch 72, making sure to leave a very long tail to sew up the hood.
Row 1 Dc in second chain from hook, and dc across to the end. Ch 2, turn.
Row 2 Dc in blo across to the end. Ch 2, turn.
Row 3-13 repeat row 2. On last row (13) ch 1, turn.
Row 14 Sc in each st across. Do not fasten off.
Folding the rectangle in half, take the long tail, and sew the back of the hood. Weave in all the ends. Turn the hood inside out, so that the part you sewed is now inside the hat.
Go back to the sc, ch 40, then sl st back up the chain until you get to the first ch, and sc along the bottom of the hood. Then repeat the ch 40 on the other side, sl st back up and sl st to first sc from row 14. And voila you now have your very own pixie hood.
Some notes on this pattern. You are basically making a rectangle, so you can do any kind of stitch you want. Want the hood a bit smaller? Do fewer chain stitches. Don’t want it thick? Just use one strand of yarn. This is just a basic pattern that you definitely expound on.

  2. Oh, this was a fun little project yesterday. I accidentally made one in my baby daughter's size instead of mine, lol, but I know where my tweaks need to happen. I used a Red Heart Unforgettable yarn, and added three rows of crocodile stitches as well as a dragon tail at the peak. I would have been lost without your pattern as a base. Thanks! :)
