Doctor Who on BBC America is still many months away, but in my search for other entertainment, I decided that I’d pair my love of craft with my love of Doctor Who. I searched high and low for crocheted items and what I found was some interesting things (such as dolls and scarves), but what caught my eye was a TARDIS hat which I had to make.

But it I could not find one pattern that was not knitted, so I decided to create my own based on a picture I found on the one and only crochet version of the hat, which was for sale but not the pattern. Through trial and error and my awesome math skills, I was able to reproduce the hat and have decided to help my fellow crocheters out by putting the pattern here.
I hope it works out for you, but I will admit, this is the first actual pattern I have written, so if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to email or leave a comment below. One last thing. Please do not post this pattern on your website or take it as your own. I ask that you instead link to my page, which will help with internet karma. Mainly yours.
So get out your crochet hooks, your dvd’s of the Doctor (or watch on Netflix) and start making your own hats while reliving the Doctor’s story until he comes back for the new season.
TARDIS Hat Crochet Pattern
H or I which is what I used for both hats, or size you want. G hook for earflaps.
Used Red Heart Royal for earflap hat, and Windsor Blue for the other hat
Red Heart Black
Red Heart White
Row 1 Make 10 DC in a magic ring (click here on how to do this), sl st in top of ch3 and pull close. Ch3 counts as a DC so a total of 11 DC.
Row 2 Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) 1 dc in same ch 3 stitch, then 2 DC in each stitch around, sl st in top of ch 3. 22 DC
Row 3 Ch 3 (ch 3 does not count as a dc and 1 dc in same ch 3 st) 1 dc in next st, then 2 dc in next stitch repeating all around, sl st in top of ch 3. 33 DC
Row 4 Ch 3 ( ch 3 does not count as a dc and no dc in ch 3 st) 1 dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat all around , sl st in top of ch 3. 44 DC
Row 5 Ch 3 (ch 3 does not count as a dc and no dc in ch 3 st) 1 dc in next 3 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat all around, sl st in top of ch 3. 55 DC
Row 6 Ch 3 (ch 3 does not count as a dc but 1 dc in ch 3 st) 1 dc in next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat all around, sl st in top of ch 3. 66 DC
Row 7 Ch 3 (no dc in ch 3 st) 1 dc in each stitch around, sl st in top of ch 3. 66 DC
Row 8 Change to black. Ch 3 1 dc in each stitch around, sl st in top of ch 3. 66 DC
Row 9 Change to blue. Ch 3 1 dc in each stitch around sl st in top of ch 3. 66 DC
Row 10-13 This will be the window pattern: Ch 3 which does not count as a dc (2 dc blue, 9 dc white) all the way around. This is done using Tapestry crochet (You work with two colors at once, simply working over the color you're not using, like working over a yarn tail to hide it. When it's time to switch colors, you just pull up the previously worked-over color and start working over the other color.) sl st in top of ch 3. 66 DC
Row 14 With blue, ch 3, 1 dc in each stitch around, sl st in top of ch 3. 66 DC
At this point you can fasten off, and then add a sc all the way around with either blue or white.
For the wording “Police Box” use some scrap yarn and taking a tapestry needle, sew in the wording. If not for sure how to do this, there are several youtube vids to look up online.
For the pom-pom, take both blue and white yarn and wrap it around three of your fingers 20 times (or more for a bigger puff), pull it from your fingers carefully and wrap some yarn around it the pom-pom. (Click here to see it more clearly) Attach to the hat.
For earflaps:
Use the smaller hook and don’t fasten off from row 14.
Row 1 Ch 3, dc in the next 11 stitches, ch 3, turn.
Row 2 dc2tog in the first 4 stitches, dc in next 6 stitches, dc2tog in last 2 stitches, ch 3 turn.
Row 3 dc2tog in the first 4 stitches, dc in next 4 stitches, dc2tog in last 2 stitches, ch 3 turn.
Row 4 dc2tog in the first 4 stitches, dc in next 2 stitches, dc2tog in last 2 stitches, ch 3 turn.
Row 5 dc2tog in the first 2 stitches, dc in next 2 stitches, dc2tog in last 2 stitches, ch 3 turn.
Row 6 dc2tog in the first 2 stitches, dc in next stitch, dc2tog in last 2 stitches, ch 3 turn.
Row 7 dc2tog in the last stitches. Fasten off.
For the other side, match up the hat to the earflap and repeat pattern.

Once the earflaps are complete take the blur yarn and sc around one earflap. When you get to the bottom, ch 40, then sl st back up, then sc all the way around, and repeat for the second earflap, then fasten off.
