Consider this the 12th pattern for the 12 days of Christmas DIY gifts. Because of time constraints, I never got around to the 12th pattern. But here is it is now.
With this pattern I wanted to play around with colors, and the Red Heart Soft line gave me some fun colors to choose from.
This pattern utilizes treble stitches as well as double crochet and single crochet. What achieves the ridges is back post crochet using both treble and double stitches. I love those knitted hats that have the ridges, however the closest I will come to knitting (at this time at least) is loom knitting.
With this project you can expect to spend 4 or more hours creating this. The other beauty of this hat, is that it is easily customizable to fit babies to adults. The pattern I created will fit a teen/small woman. The band size is what will help with sizing. The easiest way to adjust is to crochet so many rows then wrap what you have around your intended recipients head. Or if you don’t have them around, a tape measure and head/hat size will definitely come in handy.
If you want to use my pattern as is but bigger, then a go up a hook size if needed.
Please do not post this pattern on your website or take it as your own. I ask that you instead link to my page, which will help with internet karma. Please note you can use this pattern for personal use and sell what you make. I only ask that you credit me as the pattern creator and link to this article. Thank you.
Materials:
2 Skeins of Red Heart Soft in Mid Blue and Grape.
Or any worsted weight yarn of your choice. Something with a good drape (Vanna’s Choice, Red Heart With Love)
Size I hook (5.5 mm)
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Stitches used:
Single Crochet – sc
Double Crochet – dc
Treble Crochet – tc
Back Post Double Crochet – bpdc
Back Post Treble Crochet – bptc
Back Loop Only – blo
Special instructions: For the color changes, you will not work over any unused portions, like in tapestry crochet. Instead you will be dropping and picking up the colors for each row. When you slip stitch to join the round, this is when you will pick up the new color and drop then old color. I also found a video that shows how to pick up and drop color changes here
MC – Mid Blue
CC - Grape
With I hook and mc, chain 9.
Band
Row 1 Sc in 2nd chain from hook, then sc to the end. Ch 1 turn. (8 sc)
Row 2 Sc in blo before the last stitch, then sc through both loops. Ch 1 turn (8 sc)
Row 3 Sc through both loops in the first stitch then sc blo in the remaining stitches. Ch 1 turn. (8 sc)
Rows 4-60 repeat row 2-3. You should end with a Row 2.
Without cutting the yarn, sc or sl st the band together. Turn the band inside out (the sc or sl st part should now be inside the band.)
1st set: Without cutting the mc yarn you will add the cc yarn and sc evenly across the band, until you have 62 sc. Now turn your work, then ch1. (please keep in mind for this section, we are not counting rounds yet.)
2nd set: With the work turned, you will sc blo in the stitches you just made, until you get to the ch 1. With mc sl st in top of ch 1. Drop cc but do not cut it as you will be picking up the colors in an alternating pattern. Turn your work. This is the last time you turn.
Round 1 With mc, ch 3 (counts as a tc, here and throughout), then tc blo in the first set of sc made around. With cc sl st in top of ch 3. (62 tc)
Round 2 With cc, ch 2 (counts as a dc, here and throughout), bpdc in each stitch around. With mc sl st in top of ch 2. (61 bpdc, 1 dc)
