With spring almost here, it is time to put away those thick winter hats. In San Diego, while it is not a state known for seasons like the east coast, a nice breathable tam or beret is the perfect complement to sunny California.

Here is a quick and easy pattern to enjoy for spring. A few disclaimers first:

Materials:
Worsted Weight yarn, color of your choice. I used red heart yarn.
I hook
Tapestry needle
Stitches and terms used:
Single crochet – sc
Double crochet – dc
Half double crochet - hdc
Treble crochet –tr
Slip Stitch – sl st
Stitch - st
Fasten off - fo
Hat is worked in rounds with a loose hand, so if you are used to crocheting tight, you may want to go up a hook size. Also instead of crocheting into the loops the normal way, you want to crochet over the loops or more accurately between the stitches. Refer to the pictures in the slide show if you are unsure.
Rnd 1 - In a magic circle 16 tr or ch 4 and in last ch 16 tr. Sl st into first stitch. (16 tr)
Rnd 2 – Ch 2, 2 tr in each st, sl st in ch 2. (32 tr)
Rnd 3 – Ch 2, 2 tr in st then 1 tr in next st* repeat from * around. Sl st in ch 2, fo. (48 tr)
Rnd 4 – With secondary color, sl st, ch 1, then sc in each st around. Sl st in ch 1, fo. (48 sc)
Rnd 5 – With main color, sl st, ch 2, then 2 tr in st then 1 tr in next st* repeat from* around. Sl st in ch 2. (72 tr)
Rnd 6 – Ch 2, tr in each st around. Sl st in ch 2, fo. (72 tr)
Rnd 7 - With secondary color, sl st, ch 1, then sc in each st around. Sl st in ch 1, fo. (72 sc)
Rnd 8 – With main color, sl st, ch 2, then tr in each st around. Sl st in ch 2. (72 tr)
Rnd 9 – Ch 2, tr in each st around. Sl st in ch 2. (72 tr)
Rnd 10 – Ch 2, tr in each st around. Sl st in ch 2, fo. (72 tr)
Rnd 11 – With secondary color, sl st, ch 1 then sc in each st around. Sl st in ch 1, fo. (72 sc)
Rnd 12 – With main color, sl st, ch 2, then tr in each st around. Sl st in ch 2. (72 tr)
Rnd 13 – Ch 1, dc dec in each st around. Sl st in ch 1. (36 dc)
Rnd 14 – Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Sl st in ch 1, fo. (36 hdc)
Weave in all ends and voila you have your very own quick and easy beret tam.
