Free crochet pattern – Doctor Who inspired Dalek fingerless gloves

With Doctor Who gone for the season, I thought it appropriate to come up with a new Doctor Whocrochet pattern. This is my second attempt at getting closer to the source (of a Dalek in glove form) and this one comes a bit closer IMHO. Here is my first attempt here.

The gloves are easy to make using both double and half double crochet as well as front post and back post stitches. However, I also used the Fair Isle technique for the color changes. I’ve included a video that explains how to do this.

Project time should take 2.5 hours or more.

These are the perfect thing to make while watching the Doctor on Netflix or Hulu Plus. By the way, did you know that you can catch the first 7 Doctor’s on Hulu Plus? Pretty much all the episodes that aired (with the exception of the lost episodes) but if you are like me and never experienced the original Doctor, here’s your chance.

Materials:

2 Skeins of Caron Simply Soft in Grey Heather and Black

You could use other worsted weight yarn, but I suggest something that is similar to Caron Simply Soft.

Size G hook

Scissors

Tapestry needle

Stitches used:

Half Double Crochet - hdc

Double Crochet – dc

Front Post Half Double Crochet - fphdc

Front Post Double Crochet – fpdc

Back Post Double Crochet - bpdc

Special instructions: Fair Isle technique is used when changing colors. Please review the video here.

MC – Grey

CC - Black

With G hook and cc, chain 30. Being careful not to twist, sl st to form a circle.

Round 1 Ch 2 (counts as dc here and throughout), then dc in each stitch around. Sl st in top of ch 2. (30 dc)

Round 2 Ch 2, fpdc in previous ch 2, * bpdc in next stitch, fpdc in next stitch* repeat around. With mc sl st through first fpdc made. (15 fpdc, 15 bpdc)

Round 3 With mc, ch 1 (counts as hdc here and throughout), then hdc in each stitch around. Sl st in ch 1. (30 hdc)

Round 4 Ch 1, hdc in each stitch around. With cc sl st in top of ch 1. (30 hdc)

You will start using the Fair Isle technique here, so make sure you have reviewed the video if you are not familiar with this technique.

Round 5 With cc, ch 2, then dc in next two stitches, drop the cc and pick up the mc, dc in next two stitches, *drop the mc and pick up the cc, dc in next 3 stitches, drop the cc and pick up the mc, dc in the next two stitches* repeat from *. You should end the round with 2 dc in the mc. With cc sl st in top of ch 2. (30 dc)

Round 6 just repeat round 5, except you will keep using the mc going into round 7.

Round 7 With mc, ch 1, then hdc in each stitch around. Sl st in ch 1. (30 hdc)

Round 8 Ch 1, then hdc in each stitch around. Sl st in ch 1. (30 hdc)

Round 9 Ch 1, then hdc in each stitch around. With cc sl st in ch 1. (30 hdc)

Round 10 With cc, ch 1, then hdc in each stitch around. With mc sl st in ch 1. (30 hdc)

Round 11 With mc, ch 1, then hdc in each stitch around. Sl st in ch 1. (30 hdc)

Now we work the thumb

Round 12 Ch 6, then hdc in the 5th stitch, then hdc in each stitch around. Sl st in the first ch 1. (24 hdc, ch 6)

Round 13 Ch 1, then hdc in each ch from previous row, then hdc in each stitch remaining. Sl sti in ch 1. (30 hdc)

Now we are working on the Dalek Pattern

Round 14 Ch 2, then fpdc in ch 1 from previous row, then fpdc in next stitch, then bpdc in next 4 stitches with mc, *then fpdc in next two stitches with cc, then bpdc in next 4 stitches* repeat from * around. Sl st around first fpdc made. (10 fpdc, 20 bpdc)

Round 15 Ch 1, then fphdc in same stitch, then fphdc in next stitch, hdc in next 4 stitches, *fphdc in next two stitches, then hdc in next 4 stitches* repeat from * around. Sl st around first fphdc made. (10 fphdc, 20 hdc)

Round 16 Repeat round 14 (10 fpdc, 20 bpdc)

Round 17 Repeat round 15 (10 fphdc, 20 hdc)

Round 18 Repeat round 14. Sl st through first fpdc made. (10 fpdc, 20 bpdc)

Round 19 Ch 1, then hdc in each stitch around. With cc sl st in ch 1. (30 hdc)

Round 20 With cc, ch 1, then hdc in each stitch around. Sl st in ch 1. (30 hdc) Fasten off and weave in ends.
