When it comes to crochet, the rules for hat making are pretty much the same. Either you work the hat from the top down or from the bottom up, and even sideways and to this point I have never seen it done other than this way.
I came across this interesting scarf pattern, and I really liked the simplicity of the repetitive stitches, and decided that it would look good in hat form. However after trial and error, decided to try something different and voila a hat was born.
The hat is worked flat, then whip stitched together to form a tube. Afterwards it is closed. Amazing enough, the actual line where I sewed is hardly visible.
Any yarn would do, just adjust the yarn and number of starting stitches in multiples of 3 if using a lighter weight or bulky yarn. With open spaces, this hat is still warm, but perfect for a spring or summer day or evening. The name comes from the fact the open spaces remind me of o’s hence the name.

Row 1 ch 7 sk 1st stitch and hdc across to end. ch 1 turn (6 hdc)
Row 2 in blo, hdc across to end. ch 1 turn. (6 hdc)
Row 3-44 repeat r2
Now taking the J hook, sc 66 stitches across the band carefully to the end. Ch 4, turn. (ch 4 counts as a st for each row)
Row 1 Sk 1st st and trc in next two stitches, then dc back into the sk st. You should have your first x. *Sk the next st, trc in next two stitches, then dc back into the sk* repeat from * to the end. Ch 4, turn (If you have trouble following the written directions click on the here to see how the original designer does it)
Row 2 Sk 1st st and trc in next trc from previous row, then dc in in sk st. Repeat this pattern to the end. There should be a ch 4, just trc into it. (You will not have this in row 1 just row 2 on)
Row 3 repeat row 2 until hat measures 11 inches.
Now line up the edges and whipstitch the hat carefully. Once complete, you will now have a tube. And following the directions here, close the top.

  1. This pattern looks cool and I want to try it soon. But the you tube link at the end goes to a "user private" video. I can't view it. If you have the time, I'd appreciate you putting another link up. I'd look for one, but I'm not sure what it's supposed to demonstrate.
