The Roxy Poncho Sweater

It has been fun designing garments, but it also takes me longer to write up the patterns. I am still learning but this journey has been fun, especially as I crack the garment code! I’ve take some pictures, so I hope you are able to follow along. This is perfect to wear with a tank top underneath.

As with most of my garments, since I am still new to sizing, I make my designs easily adjustable for any size/any yarn. While this was designed exclusively with Lion Brand Mandala in mind, you could easily adjust for heavier yarn by adding/subtracting rounds as well as adding/subtracting the starting chain.

No gauge is given because this is a loose fitting sweater. I believe an advanced beginner could do this pattern. It should take over 10+ hours to complete give or take.

Pattern is written in US crochet terms. This pattern gives you PERMISSION TO SELL your finished items. It is appreciated if you credit the design to Acquanetta Ferguson and to list the pattern link.

H hook
G hook
2 skeins mandala yarn I used Gnome and Thunderbird

Stitches used
Double Crochet - dc
Single Crochet - sc
Double Crochet Decrease - dc dec Here’s how you do a dc dec.

Some Notes

All ch 3 are counted as a dc, and all ch 4 counts as dc ch-1.

With H hook, ch 120 sl st to form a circle.

Round 1 ch 3 (which counts as  dc here and throughout), dc in the next 8 stitches (9 dc at this point), in the 10th stitch 2 dc ch-1 2dc in same stitch (first corner made), dc in next 49 sts, in the 50th stitch 2 dc ch-1 2dc in same stitch (second corner made), dc in next 9 sts,in the 10th stitch 2 dc ch-1 2dc in same stitch (third corner made), dc in next 49 sts, in the 50th stitch 2 dc ch-1  2dc in same stitch (second corner made). Sl st in top of ch 3. Do not turn.

Round 2 Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch-1 here and throughout), *sk a st, dc ch-1*,  repeat from * until you get to the first corner, then in ch-1 space,  2 dc ch-1 2dc, repeat repeat  for each corner (2 dc ch-1 2dc in ch-1 space)around until you get back to the ch-4 from the beginning. Make sure you end with a dc and ch -1. Sl st in 3rd chain.

Round 3 Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch-1 here and throughout), *dc ch-1 in dc from previous round*, repeat from * until you get to the first corner, then in ch-1 space, 2 dc ch-1 2dc, repeat for each corner (2 dc ch-1 2dc in ch-1 space) around until you get back to the ch-4 from the beginning. Make sure you end with a dc and ch -1. Sl st in 3rd chain.

Round 4 Ch 3 1 dc in each st including ch-1 spaces, then 2 dc ch1 2dc in each corner. Repeat until you get to the ch-3 from previous round. Sl st in ch-3.

Round 5 Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch-1 here and throughout), *sk a st, dc ch-1*,  repeat from * until you get to the first corner, then in ch-1 space,  2 dc ch-1 2dc, repeat repeat  for each corner (2 dc ch-1 2dc in ch-1 space)around until you get back to the ch-4 from the beginning. Make sure you end with a dc and ch -1. Sl st in 3rd chain.

Round 6 Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch-1 here and throughout), *dc ch-1 in dc from previous round*, repeat from * until you get to the first corner, then in ch-1 space, 2 dc ch-1 2dc, repeat for each corner (2 dc ch-1 2dc in ch-1 space) around until you get back to the ch-4 from the beginning. Make sure you end with a dc and ch -1. Sl st in 3rd chain.

Round 7 - Round 28 for the rest of the rounds, keep repeating the pattern, 1 row dc, 2 row dc ch1. At this point you can add or subtract rounds depending on your size, so make sure to try the piece on to gauge where you want to end.

I ended up with 250 dc. Fold the piece in half (on the wrong side) and measure off how tight or loose you want your arm opening to be, then sew up the sides. I sc in the front loop only for 50 stitches on each side. Fasten off.

Turn the sweater to the right side and finish off with the last few rounds.

Round 29 Ch 4, *sk a stitch then dc ch-1* do this until you get to the original corners made. Just dc ch-1 in the ch-1 space for each of the corners from the previous round, making sure to sk a stitch then dc ch-1 for the rest of the round. There is only 4 ch-1 spaces that were part of the corner if that helps. Sl st in 3rd ch.

Round 30 Ch 4, dc ch-1 in each dc from previous round. Sl st in 3rd ch.

Round 31 Ch 3, then 1 dc in each stitch around. Sl st in ch 3.

Switch to G hook

Round 32 Ch 3 dc in the next 2 stitches, then 1 dc dec, *dc in next 3 stitches, then 1 dc dec* repeat from * around. Sl st in ch 3.
Round 33 Ch 3, dc in next stitch, then dc dec, *dec in next 2 stitches, dc dec around* repeat from* around. Sl st in ch 3.

Round 34 Ch 3, dc dec around, *dc in ext stitch, dc dec* repeat from * around. Sl st in ch 3.

Round 35 Ch 3, 1dc in each stitch around. Sl st in ch 3.

Round 36 1 sc in each round. fasten off and weave in ends.

  4. What size does the instructions fit? I know you said it was adjustable but I need to know how large the garment measures so I have a basis to calculate what I will need to do. Thanks!

    1. Hello, I wear a 2x and I made the sweater to fit me. I hope that helps. I suck at measurements for other sizes, and I hope to rectify that in the future :) Thank you!
